The Opportunity
The Prevention and Advocacy Officer is a newly created role within our Prevention and Advocacy team. Developed in line with our strategic plan, this is an exciting opportunity to join our Team during a period of significant transformation.      

This role will be directly reporting to and supporting the Head of Prevention and Advocacy, operating across all Prevention and Advocacy programs to aid the organisation’s efforts with initiatives designed to increase awareness and support for pets and people in the community. You will directly influence our ability to expand our reach and impact by developing and maintaining strong relationships with our stakeholders and the wider community.    


Key Responsibilities

  • Prevention: Research, design, implement and foster best practice industry initiatives to deliver a visionary proactive program suite.  Support Shelter Diversion initiatives to help keep pets in their homes and reduce intake – this also includes our national Getting to Zero (G2Z), National Desexing Network (NDN), Community Outreach and Education programs. 

  • Program Development: Research and administer the development and implementation of all community-based programs, including Education (e.g., school and community prevention programs), Affordable Services (e.g., low-cost desexing vet services), and Community Support (e.g., pet food banks). 

  • Advocacy: Research and determine advocacy initiatives in line with organisational short- and long-term goals. Assist with the design of action plans, seek support and lobby stakeholders to bring about change. Support our advocacy efforts by working with lawmakers to strengthen Animal Protection Legislation, increase welfare for pets and people, and establish better standards for animals. Design and launch impactful Public Awareness Campaigns to highlight key issues (e.g., unethical breeding, racing). Provide expert opinion and evidence-based research to government inquiries and committees to inform policy decisions. 

  • Logistics: Manage the logistics of relevant community events, including scheduling, resource coordination, and location selection. 

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Proven prevention and advocacy success in the welfare sector. 
  • Tertiary qualification in communications, governance or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience. 
  • Flexibility to work outside of business hours to attend events. 
  • Excellent communication, advisory, negotiation, and interpersonal skills. 
  • Proven ability to influence and support the team. 
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, interpersonal, influencing, advisory and negotiation skills.  
  • A valid driver's licence and the commitment to attend all sites regularly. 
  • Approved Police and Vulnerable Persons Checks.
