About the role
Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) is seeking a compassionate and experienced Veterinary Nurse to join our Ipswich Animal Rehoming Centre in a permanent part-time role. This position offers a minimum of 3 shifts per week, with opportunities for additional shifts, including some weekend work.

Ipswich is a busy and rewarding location, where many animals rely on AWLQ’s care and expertise. Working closely with our veterinary team, you’ll help ensure the smooth and efficient flow of animals through the clinic so they can move forward to their forever homes.
This role also offers the opportunity to support AWLQ’s community outreach projects across the Ipswich region, helping extend care, education, and positive outcomes beyond our centre and into the wider community.
You’ll liaise daily with a range of staff, departments, and foster carers, so strong communication, teamwork, and multitasking skills are essential. If you’re looking for a role where your skills, empathy, and leadership truly matter, this could be the perfect fit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Consult Support: Support veterinarians with routine health examinations and medical cases
  • Foster Care Assistance: Assist veterinarians with foster carer consultations
  • Nursing Support: Assist in radiography, surgical procedures, monitor patient anaesthesia and post-operative procedures. In-house and external pathology procedures. Prepare medications as required
  • Inpatient Care: Nurse hospitalised animals, monitor clinical signs and communicate with the team
  • Communication: Liaise clearly and professionally with staff, volunteers, foster carers, and the community to ensure smooth operations and positive outcomes
  • Organisation Pro: Prepare and implement surgery and consult schedules
  • Patient files: Data entry of health, treatment and behaviour information
  • Processes: Compliance with AWLQ policy and procedure, in addition to compliance with state and federal legislation
  • Equipment Maintenance: Scheduling and management of veterinary equipment
  • Stock control and ordering supplies

What are the minimum requirements for this position? 

  • Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or recognised equivalent
  • Ideally 3+ years' vet nursing experience
  • Excellent animal handling skills, experience with anxious animals in the clinic environment
  • Experience in a busy, fast-paced work environment
  • Good computer literacy, including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Previous experience in a shelter/rescue environment will be highly regarded
